REVISION ACTIVITY |1|

To Kill A Mockingbird
After listening to the first chapter again I noticed that in the first few lines we are allowed to see a glimpse of the future with the situations with the Ewells. The first chapter starts off a few years after the end of the book, after Atticus’ case with the Ewells and Tom Robinson. It prepares us with an argument between Jem and Scout which starts with ‘Who started it.’ ‘It’ being Jem’s broken leg.

The first chapter also uses alot figurative language to descibe the town and it’s people. I found this an interesting way to open up a story but also quite an effective way of introducing us to the town of Maycomb. Harper Lee tells us that ‘Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town’. This is a use of personification because a town, which is a location or conglomerate of people/ houses cannot be tired but instead shows us Scout’s feeling towards the town. Lee also uses a simile to describe the women of Maycomb, ‘and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum.’

TKAMB Chapter 16

In this chapter we learn some more about the people in Maycomb county and the hierarchy of the people. We can learn from a quote from Aunt Alexandria that she doesn’t think very highly of the black community in Maycomb. After Atticus said in front of Calpurnia, at the dinner table, that “He despises Negroes, won’t have one near him”. Aunt Alexandria, after watching Cal leave, says that “Don’t talk like that in front of them.” She refers to Cal as “Them”, generalising the black community and also turning it into a derogatory term. This shows that Aunt Alexandria doesn’t have much respect for the ‘minority’ class in Maycomb which can range from the black community to the Mennonites from the forest.

TKAM CHAPTER 13

I think that pride and shame are big things to the characters, especially þvfeëç ïfsß because she feels like she holds the reputation of the family on her shoulders. She is ashamed of Atticus because of the way he has raised his kids and his reputation around time. She feels she has to atleast raise the children properly.

TKAMB chapter 10

In this chapter we find out a few new things about Atticus. First of all he hides alot of things from his kids, possibly to stop these things from affecting their future. Second of all he hides the fact that he can shoot to his children and I think this is because he wants scout to not brag about her dad which Jem picks up on quite well. ‘If he wanted us to know he would have told us.

DUSTY FOOTPRINTS Creative Writing

DUSTY FOOTPRINTS

Dusty footprints trailed through the open gate.

The rough and shaggy grass like uncombed hair, desolate and dead swayed in the humid noon air.

The red front door, well almost red, it looked as if it hadn’t been painted in a good 2 years, hung ajar.

Through the front door sat an old man, in his eighties, drinking what seemed to be an ancient bottle of Kentucky Bourbon. Hunched over eyes glued to the old television set drinking and smoking.

Drinking and smoking,
Drinking and smoking,
Drinking and smoking,

The old man, face riddled with scars and wrinkles deep as a rift cutting through space and time, choked on the grime hanging in the air and looked up around the room. It was filled with old magazines and tin cans that seemed to have been filled with sardines and baked beans. The room surrounding him was decrepit and the dust made seeing in the room arduous. After peering through his heavy lids he managed to depict the image of a person standing at the foot of his open door. The outline of a boy perhaps? Still, someone he was not acquainted with. The time-worn man mumbled drunkenly out to the newcomer.

‘C-come out from the dark boy, let me see your face…’

The boy trudged through the littered hallway, like it were a marshy swamp, towards the wasted grizzled man. He came to a sudden stop outside of the confused parlour, hands in his pockets, and stood without a sound. Although only young the boy looked stout and strong. He stared the old man straight in the eyes and spoke.

‘Excuse me mister, I need to tell you somethin real important.’ The boy stuttered with stress.

‘What is it son? Come on spit it out.’ Urged the old man.

‘Ms Acker down yonder told me they were comin sir, she said you need to git goin before they catch up.’

The old-timer sat up in his collapsed armchair and sighed. He started murmuring to himself out of earshot of the boy. He looked away from the boy towards a busted and broken cabinet.

‘See that cabinet over there boy, go an get the brown shoebox in the back for me. God only knows I’m too old for this kind of business, not after last time.’ Rattled the old man.

The youngster shuffled over to the cabinet through the old tins and broken whisky bottles. He reached into the cabinet and inside all the matured suits at the bottom was a brick brown faded shoebox with the card flaking on the sides. The junior went to open the lid.

‘Watch yourself Kiddo, if you want to keep that innocent little head o yours clean you better keep your beak outa that there box.’ Barked the veteran.
‘Excuse me askin sir but what exactly is inside this here box sir?’ inquired the boy.
‘I said before, keep your snout out kid.’ he retaliated.

The boy waded back to the grey armchair and passed the shoebox cautiously to the old man, acting as if inside the box were a bomb ready to detonate. The old man put the box down to one side and took one more draw on his smoke.

Drinking and smoking,
Drinking and smoking,
Drinking and smoking,

‘Go on kid, it’s gettin late and I’m pretty sure your folks wouldn’t want you out in the dark by yourself. Go on, split.’

As the boy scurried out of the flaking maroon exit he spun around to take on more look into the pensioners dull grey eyes and in the last seconds of being in the house he saw a spark of strength erupt from the old man’s eyes. He took one last breath and high-tailed into the mild Louisianan twilight leaving behind a complete and utter mystery. One that he would probably never hear about again.

Probably.

TKAMB Chapter Nine

I think that shame and pride influence the actions of Scout. Scout hits Francis out of shame to defend her Fathers reputation. This is because of her great amount of pride. I also think that Francis is acting out of pride as well because he is defending the family, he is told by his mother that ‘Atticus will be the downfall of this family’ so uses it to tease Scout.

SECTION A

How has pride been shown in MLD and one other poem you have studied?

My last Duchess is a Browning poem. The narrator (or Duke) shows he has alot of pride because the way he reacts to the execution of his wife. The Duke describes the death of his wife by saying ‘I gave commands; then all smiles stopped together.’ This shows he feels like he needs alot of power or even has alot of power and needs to show it off. Another example of his pride is the way he then acts after she is dead. He acts like the execution is nothing. This is shown by ‘Notice Neptune, though, taming a sea-horse, thought a rarity’. He shows here that he is in a place of great power and does not care for death of his wife.

TKAMB: Chapter Six

Im this chapter Jem, Dill and Scout sneak into the Radley back lot and get caught by a mysterious shadow (Boo Radley). They do this out of curiosity. After they find their way back Atticus notices that Jems pants are missing. Dill covers with a lie about strip poker and they get off Scott free. Later on in the chapter we learn something new about atticus. Jem goes back to the Radley lot to retrieve his pants because he doesn’t want Atticus to find out about them being in the Radley lot. He says he does this because he doesn’t want Atticus to whip him, because he’s never been whipped by atticus before and wants to keep it that way. This teaches us yet another thing about the way Atticus parents.

SIGNIFICANT QUOTE: Atticus ain’t ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way.

SIGNIFICANT CHARACTERS:Jem, Scout, Atticus, Dill, Nathan Radley, Boo Radley?, Ns Rachel.

TKAMB Chapter Five

Important things this chapter, Scouts relationship with Jem and Dill, shows how they are all growing up. We learn about atticus and his relationship with his children. We learn that he can be quite hard on his children when they are out of line but is quite immersed in his job. We also learn about Jem and his wanting to be a lawyer when he’s older. “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is in public”

This teaches us about Atticus and him at work and at home.

To Kill A Mockingbird: Chapter Four

In this chapter we go back to a period of summer for the children where once again they are joined by Dill. This summer Dill and Jem become obsessed with Boo Radley once again. The most significant event in the chapter is when Jem rolls Scout into the Radley lot in a tyre. Jem has to go back to the lot to grab the tyre and to prove he was not scared they created a game to mock the events and rumors about the Radleys.

‘I had heard another sound, so low I could not have heard it from the sidewalk. Someone inside the house was laughing.’

I like this quote because it shows that she is scared of the Radleys. Also in the chapter we see Scouts morality levels go up during the chapter, questioning the games that they were playing.

CHARACTERS: Scout, Jem, Dill, Atticus.
