To Kill A Mockingbird: Chapter Four

In this chapter we go back to a period of summer for the children where once again they are joined by Dill. This summer Dill and Jem become obsessed with Boo Radley once again. The most significant event in the chapter is when Jem rolls Scout into the Radley lot in a tyre. Jem has to go back to the lot to grab the tyre and to prove he was not scared they created a game to mock the events and rumors about the Radleys.

‘I had heard another sound, so low I could not have heard it from the sidewalk. Someone inside the house was laughing.’

I like this quote because it shows that she is scared of the Radleys. Also in the chapter we see Scouts morality levels go up during the chapter, questioning the games that they were playing.

CHARACTERS: Scout, Jem, Dill, Atticus.

  1. I think your chosen quotation is excellent and you have begun to justify.

    Target:
How does this quotation add to the tone of the chapter? How does this help to contribute to the structure? Why? Is it important that Scout is young when she tells us this? Why?
