Im this chapter Jem, Dill and Scout sneak into the Radley back lot and get caught by a mysterious shadow (Boo Radley). They do this out of curiosity. After they find their way back Atticus notices that Jems pants are missing. Dill covers with a lie about strip poker and they get off Scott free. Later on in the chapter we learn something new about atticus. Jem goes back to the Radley lot to retrieve his pants because he doesn’t want Atticus to find out about them being in the Radley lot. He says he does this because he doesn’t want Atticus to whip him, because he’s never been whipped by atticus before and wants to keep it that way. This teaches us yet another thing about the way Atticus parents.
SIGNIFICANT QUOTE: Atticus ain’t ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way.

This is good. To break it down a little more, think to yourself with every example:
1) What is being done
2) What EFFECT does this have?
3) Where does this effect come from?
4) What conclusion can be drawn about the way text messaging works?
So, for your example of “long!!” you could say:
1) The person texting is emphasising the time and boredom they experience doing their art coursework by using the idiom ‘long’ and repeating the use of the exclamation mark.
2) The effect is that the reader gets a clear sense that the writer is unimpressed with the coursework demands
3) This is achieved because the exclamation marks suggest the way the word would have been said in a verbal conversation – it would have been emphasises and extended, as if the person was saying “loooong”. Essentially the writer is drawing from features of spoken language and encoding them into texting in a very efficient way using extra punctuation.
4) This suggests that text messaging, more than other forms of written communication, uses devices that are designed to reflect the sound of spoken language. Texting devices mimic spoken devices in this way.
Does this way of organising your answer make sense? (obviously in your final essay you’ll not be able to use the numbers like I have – but they’re there to link my writing to the suggested structure)
Also – try reading what you wrote aloud to make sure you’ve made your point with the greatest clarity. If you’re using a writer tomorrow, make sure they read what you’ve dictated to them back to you often.
